According to recent research, in the UK, an average person consumes 22kg of refined sugar per year. In comparison, we consume only around 1.3 pounds of honey per year. According to new research, if you can switch out your intake of refined sugar and use pure raw honey instead, the health benefits can be enormous.

Honey was used as an ancient remedy for the treatment of infected wounds, which has recently been ‘rediscovered’ by the medical profession, particularly where conventional modern therapeutic agents fail. The first written reference to honey, a Sumerian tablet writing, dating back to 2100-2000 BC, mentions honey's use as a drug and an ointment. Aristotle (384-322 BC), when discussing different honeys, referred to pale honey as being “good as a salve for sore eyes and wounds”. Raw honey is a truly a “functional food,” which means it’s a natural food with health benefits. Raw honey contains 22 amino acids, 27 minerals and 5,000 enzymes. Minerals include iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium. Vitamins found in honey include vitamin B6, thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin. High-quality honey contains many important antioxidants. These includes phenols, enzymes and compounds like flavonoids and organic acids. All these biocompounds exert incredibly healthy properties.

What is raw honey?

It is a pure, unfiltered and unpasteurized sweetener made by bees from the nectar of flowers. Most of the honey consumed today is processed honey that’s been heated and filtered since it was gathered from the hive. Unlike processed honey, raw honey does not get robbed of its incredible nutritional value and health powers. It can help with everything from low energy to sleep problems to seasonal allergies. Switching to raw honey may even help weight-loss efforts when compared to diets containing sugar or high fructose corn syrup. A research has shown that honey is one of the best choices of carbohydrate to consume right before exercising. When it comes to raw honey’s use in athletic endeavours, I highly recommend raw honey for both fuelling and recovery.

Studies have shown that a daily dose of raw honey increases levels of health-promoting antioxidants in our body. Honey contains polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. These compounds are able to inhibit the damaging action of free radicals.

Raw Honey Helps you to Sleep Better

Raw honey promotes restorative sleep. Eating raw honey fosters the release of melatonin in the brain by creating a small spike in insulin levels, which stimulates the release of tryptophan. Tryptophan converts to serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin – the sleep hormone.

A specific type of raw honey, the Manuka honey, has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), these pathogens are responsible for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric malignancies and general infections. Thus, honey is a promising ally to protect your gut from pathogenic bacteria promoting a really healthy gut.

Increasing scientific evidence shows that a single dose of honey can reduce mucus secretion and coughs. In one study, honey was just as effective as medicine for colds. For a cough, a half teaspoon to two teaspoons of honey at bedtime is a studied and recommended dosage for anyone over the age of one.

In conclusion, there are many good reasons to start eating raw honey daily. Just remember if you cooking raw honey, the benefits of bioactive compounds would be lost with the high temperature, but if you want to cook or bake with honey, regular honey would be recommended for better cost-benefit.

  1. Stream raw honey onto your morning porridge, muesli or Greek yogurt - add some nuts, seeds, dried fruits and voi lá.
  2. Make an exquisite honey-mustard dressing! Whisk vinegar, raw honey, French mustard, and smashed garlic in large bowl. Add oil in a stream, whisking. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
