Peppermint

A little known fact is that peppermint is a hybrid of two other types of mint plants – watermint and spearmint. Peppermint is native to Europe and is one of the oldest herbs to be used in medicinal practices. Traces of peppermint have even been found in ancient Egyptian pyramids.

Peppermint oil is best known for relieving the discomfort of indigestion and trapped wind. It’s also effective at relieving nausea and upset stomachs by having a soothing effect on the gut walls. It can also ease headaches and migraines by helping to relax tense muscles. It makes an effective travel sickness aid.

It’s also regularly used for relieving congestion in the sinuses as it helps to open the airways. Compounds called menthone and menthol are the active parts of peppermint that allows it to have this effect on our breathing. They help to break up phlegm on the chest, which helps to clear chesty coughs and blocked sinuses.

There is evidence to suggest that peppermint oil can also increase energy levels and therefore enhance athletic performance.
