St. John’s Wort

Used in herbalism, homeopathy and Ayurvedic medicine, St. Johns wort is best known as an antidepressant, helping to treat mild depression, anxiety and mood swings. Also known as goat weed, the oil is made using the flowers of the plant, picked when they’re in full flower. The plant is native to Europe.

But St. John’s wort has many other valuable uses. The oil can be used to help ease menstrual cramping, symptoms of the menopause, hormonal imbalances and other types of stomach cramps.

In an ointment, it can be used to help treat burns, cuts and inflammation of the skin. As a tincture, St. John’s wort can help soothe shingles, cold sores and herpes, and also has an antiviral element, helpful for these viral conditions.
