Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that’s essential for keeping the bones and teeth strong and healthy. It helps to regulate the level of calcium and phosphate in the body, which are important minerals for teeth and bone health. Vitamin D also helps to keep the muscles strong.

There aren’t many good food sources of vitamin D, but egg yolks, fish with edible bones, such as sardines and pilchards, and mushrooms to a certain extent, are relatively rich in vitamin D.

Instead, the body manufactures most of our vitamin D from sunlight hitting our skin. This means that during the summer months, the majority of us get enough vitamin D. But during the winter months, it’s advised that we take a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement. Those who keep most of their skin covered or who don’t get outside very often should consider a vitamin D supplement all year round.
