4 best essential oils for energy

We all have those days where getting out of bed seems like a feat and our energy levels are at their lowest. Whether it’s something specific like starting a new fitness routine, or a general sense of tiredness, there’s a struggle to maintain consistency or even get started. Instead of reaching for that extra cup of coffee or tea, here are a few essential oils that are scientifically proven to help you feel that boost of energy.  

Peppermint

Peppermint is an amazing essential oil that can invigorate the senses and help to keep you alert. It’s been proven that “peppermint essential oil can increase alertness and mental clarity and decrease the perceived physical workload,” (1). In addition, one study found in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that inhaling peppermint essential oil before exercising improved, “the exercise performance, respiratory function variables, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory gas exchange parameters,”(2). It’s an effective tool for keeping alert and improving both cognitive and physical performance. 

May Chang 

May Chang is an amazing essential oil that has healing, uplifting and relaxing properties to help ease anxious feelings and clear the mind. Its refreshing scent has been proven to help with memory loss, anxiety, insomnia and encourages revitalisation (3). It’s an effective tool to help encourage the body to feel reinvigorated. 

Grapefruit 

Grapefruit essential oil is a sweet and invigorating essential oil that is linked to a number of health benefits. While more research is needed on grapefruit essential oil on its own, citrus oils have been proven to be the most effective for energising the body and mind (4). Grapefruit on its own is proven to reduce fatigue and exhaustion in the body and mind (3). 

Rosemary

Rosemary essential oil has been linked to a number of beneficial effects including improving mood, clearing the mind, relieving stress, an immune booster, and is considered cognitive stimulant alongside its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. One study found that rosemary essential oil “could powerfully relieve exercise-induced fatigue,” (1) and another discovered that it “can produce objective effects on cognitive performance, as well as subjective effects on mood,” (5). It is undeniably one of the most effective essential oils for improving cognitive function and revitalising the body.
